Xylitol and diabetes parameters study (animal)
A recent study published at the Journal of Medicinal Food compared the effects of xylitol consumption with those of sugar consumption on various diabetes-associated parameters in rats (Islam MS, 2011). The rats where divided in three groups, control, xylitol group and sugar group. For three weeks these groups were given water, a xylitol water solution and a sugar water solution respectively. A number of parameters where examined such as weight gain, fasting and non fasting glucose and insulin serum levels. The researchers concluded that according to the data
xylitol can be a better sweetener than sucrose to maintain diabetes-related parameters at a physiologically safer and stable condition
